DeupSeuk, a glossy new EU Competition Compass, Europe's umpteenth Silicon Valley, and more

Welcome to the bi-weekly “Inside European Deep Tech” newsletter, compiled by Robin Wauters, founder of Profoundo and formerly founding editor and CEO of Tech.eu.

Can’t believe 42,000 of you already subscribed to this little hobby project of mine! 😮

Let’s get to it for issue #2.

DeepSeek overload

There've been more hot takes on DeepSeek than Brussels bureaucrats trying to regulate AI before understanding it, but I guess I can’t not include something on the shiniest ‘new’ LLM on the market.

Who could have predicted such a shake-up in the first month of the new year already?

DeepSeek’s meteoric rise has very little to do with the EU or the European AI industry and its investors, even though some unsurprisingly try hard to make it so (you can always count on Sifted, on Sifted, Sifted and also on Sifted). The implications are and will pertain to the US, and the country the upstart hails from. And yes, probably good for us, users.

But sure, it also had a relatively predictable knock-on effect on the likes of ASML (they’ll be fine, at least for now), and AI companies like Axelera, Mistral and Aleph Alpha of course, but I agree with observers that it could (should) serve as - another - wake-up call for Europe alongside Stargate as the AI race continues. It’s still very early days, the balance shift in full effect for the long term, and the outcome unclear.

What is clear is that Italy’s data protection authority will always be quick to launch probes, as will Ireland’s. By the way, the EU is also ‘closely monitoring’, evidently, and British officials have commenced a probe as well.

Finally, pretty please with a cherry on top, let’s not call DeepSeek “Europe’s new TiKTok”.

Grazie.

A Competitiveness Compass for the EU

The European Commission adopted a "competitiveness compass", outlining actions it plans to undertake in the coming years to address the competitiveness gap highlighted by the Draghi report.

There have been more hot takes on said Compass than EU antitrust cases against American tech giants (I can do this all day) but as usual the proof will be in the pudding.

If you’ve read the Draghi report (technically titled ‘The future of European competitiveness’), or even just the summary 😉 , you’ll quickly realise that the compass indeed builds heavily on that report’s recommendations, translating them into tangible measures (to a degree).

Politico broke the thing down line by line, which makes it a great start to learn more.

The question is now: what happens when the compass/strategy and pronounced willingness to make change effectively makes contact with the real world?

And: will they ever find a half-decent graphic designer for this kind of stuff?

Much more to follow in future editions of this newsletter about the EU’s renewed (or reworded if you will) plans to simplify, decarbonise and “close the innovation gap” with a massive focus on deep tech, and its ‘EU Start-up and Scale-up Strategy’.

In the meantime, help the EU Inc movement reach its goal(s).
